π― Starting Point
- Age: 12 (turning 13 next summer)
- Entering: Grade 7 (Sept 2025βJune 2026)
- Known Interests: Human Biology & general science
- Background: Homeschooled/unschooled until now β needs structure for re-entry into formal school
π Phase 1: Foundation Building (Grade 7 β 8)
Goal:
Build strong academic skills, catch up where needed, and keep her engaged with subjects she loves.
Core Focus
- Math: Fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages β lead into pre-algebra/algebra basics.
- English: Writing, reading comprehension, essay structure.
- Science: Human biology (body systems, cells, genetics) + general science.
- Social Studies: Canadian history, world geography, early civics.
- Study Skills: Organization, note-taking, test prep.
Projects & Engagement
- Human Body Journal β drawings, notes, and facts.
- Simple science experiments at home.
- Reading List: mix of fiction & nonfiction (e.g., Women in Science).
By End of Phase 1:
- Comfortable with structured learning.
- On track with math & reading for peers.
- Excited about science & confident in class.
π Phase 2: Exploration & Pre-Specialization (Grades 9 β 10)
Goal:
Start connecting interests to possible careers and build early high school credit strength.
Focus Areas
- Science: Dive into anatomy, physiology, and environmental science.
- Intro Psychology: Age-appropriate intro to human behavior.
- Health Science Careers: Explore nursing, lab tech, physiotherapy.
Projects
- Science fair or personal research project.
- Volunteer at a science center, animal shelter, or hospital (if possible).
π Phase 3: Decision & Direction (Grades 11 β 12)
Goal:
Decide on a career path (e.g., medical field, biology, health tech) and prep for post-secondary.
Academic Goals
- Take Biology 20/30, Chemistry 20/30, and possibly Physics.
- Complete math up through pre-calculus if aiming for a science degree.
Career Exploration
- Job shadowing: nurse, physiotherapist, forensic scientist, lab tech.
- Summer college programs (U of C offers some).
Prep for University/College
- Meet Canadian admission requirements for chosen field.
- Build a portfolio of science work and volunteer hours.
π
Next Steps (Summer β Sept 2025)
- Diagnostic Review: Light math/English assessment to identify gaps.
- Starter Projects: Small human biology poster project & science journal.
- School Prep: Build a Grade 7 supply kit & planner; coordinate with school for class placement/support.
